The jewellery market has little to do with buying and selling gold for investment purposes. When you buy a piece of jewellery at a high street jeweller, the majority of what you pay goes towards the item's design or what is called “ornamental value”. If your piece carries a luxury brand name, you can bet that most of its value goes towards that name too.

When you eventually go to sell your gold jewellery, keep in mind you will not recover the ornamental value or the premium you paid for the brand name. You will only be paid based on the actual precious metal contained.
